May 2, 2012 Facilities Assessment Subcommittee Meeting

The following Districts presented on the progress of their proposed projects at the May 2, 2012 MSBA Facilities Assessment Subcommittee Meeting:

Ayer Shirley Regional School District
Ayer Shirley Regional High School

Current Phase: Feasibility Study
 
Owner’s Project Manager: Dore & Whittier Management Partners
Designer: Symmes Maini & McKee Associates
 
The District, the Owner’s Project Manager, and the Design team presented an overview of the options studied, the site constraints, the existing building layout, and certain aspects of the District’s preferred solution. The District explained that the educational program drove the selection of the preferred solution. The Facilities Assessment Subcommittee (“FAS”) inquired about the preliminary cost estimates that were presented for the proposed project, the District’s master plan, components of both the middle school and high school educational program, and existing classroom space.  MSBA staff asked the District to present a comparison of the anticipated capital and operational costs for the three-school solution and the four-school solution. MSBA staff is currently working with the District to reach a mutually agreeable solution to recommend to the MSBA’s Board of Directors
 
 
Greater New Bedford Regional Vocational Technical School District Greater New Bedford Regional Vocational Technical High School

The District, the Owner’s Project Manager, and the Design team presented an overview of the existing building, the site constraints, and the components of the District’s preferred solution. The Facilities Assessment Subcommittee (“FAS”) inquired about the District’s long-term plan regarding student applications, Chapter 74 program approval, special education space, and accessibility. The FAS discussed the importance of vocational technical high schools working with local colleges to understand the labor market and future needs in the Southeastern Massachusetts area and the entire state. MSBA staff is currently working with the District to reach a mutually agreeable solution to recommend to the MSBA’s Board of Directors.

The District, the Owner’s Project Manager, and the Design team presented an overview of the work conducted during the Feasibility Study, including the options studied and the District’s preferred solution. The Facilities Assessment Subcommittee (“FAS”) noted that it is important that the cost estimates that will be generated during the next phase of work demonstrate a thorough understanding of the existing facility and appropriate consideration for design and pricing contingencies that reflect that nature of the proposed renovation. MSBA staff highlighted the need for the District and their team to understand MSBA policies regarding the allocation of construction and contingency cost estimates. MSBA staff is currently working with the District to reach a mutually agreeable solution to recommend to the MSBA’s Board of Directors.
