MSBA Helps Break Ground at Penn Brook Elementary School in Georgetown

Jack McCarthy, Executive Director of the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA), today helped break ground on construction of the new Penn Brook Elementary School. The MSBA is reimbursing 54.76% percent of eligible costs toward the $46,169,400 school, which will serve 770 students from Kindergarten through grade 6.

State Treasurer Steven Grossman, Chairman of the MSBA, expressed delight over the Authority’s participation in the long-awaited project. “Thanks to the MSBA’s successful partnership with Georgetown, students and staff of Penn Brook Elementary School will benefit from a state-of-the-art learning and teaching environment for many years to come,” he said.

The project consists of a new 98,000 square foot school on the site of the existing facility. The current Penn Brook School was built in 1970 and suffers from deficiencies in major building systems, including structural integrity, mechanical, electrical and plumbing.

“Construction of the Penn Brook Elementary School will provide local students with a beautiful new learning space,” Executive Director McCarthy said. “This will undoubtedly enhance and improve their ability to excel in the classroom.”

The MSBA partners with Massachusetts communities to support the design and construction of educationally-appropriate, flexible, sustainable and cost-effective public school facilities. Since its 2004 inception, the Authority has made over $10.3 billion in reimbursements for school capital improvement projects. MSBA reimbursements have saved districts over $2.9 billion in avoided local interest costs and have provided much needed cash flow to communities.
