The following Districts presented on the progress of their proposed projects at the June 24, 2015 Massachusetts School Building Authority (the “MSBA”) Facilities Assessment Subcommittee (the “FAS”) Meeting:
City of Newton
Cabot Elementary School
Current Phase: Feasibility Study
Owner’s Project Manager: Joslin Lesser + Associates, Inc.
Designer: DiNisco Design Partnership, Ltd.
The District, the Owner’s Project Manager, and design team presented its overview of the options studied during the Feasibility Study and the District’s preferred solution of an addition and renovation project at the existing Cabot Elementary School. The FAS, MSBA staff, and the District discussed: 1) the closure of a portion of a public road; 2) ownership of the Cabot Park land; 3) the timeline associated with state and local approvals; 4) safety measures associated with elementary level STEM programs; 5) site and building accessibility and entry; 6) the District’s position on providing 1:1 technology in the future; 7) the universal pre-K program; 8) foreign languages taught at the elementary level; and, 9) the proposed “swing space” and transition schedule associated with the utilization of the Carr School.
MSBA staff is currently working with the District to reach a mutually agreeable solution to recommend to the MSBA’s Board of Directors.
Minuteman Regional Vocational Technical School District
Minuteman Vocational Technical Regional High School
Current Phase: Feasibility Study
Owner’s Project Manager: Skanska USA Building, Inc.
Designer: Kaestle Boos Associates, Inc.
The District, the Owner’s Project Manager, and design team presented its overview of the options studied during the Feasibility Study and the District’s preferred solution to replace the existing Minuteman Vocational Technical Regional High School on the existing site. The FAS, MSBA staff, and the District discussed: 1) the proposed location of permanent trade space utilities; 2) required permitting for the construction of the facility in the new host-town of Lincoln; 3) the percentage of students receiving special education at the current and proposed facility; 4) proposed spaces for the LABBB Collaborative and TOIL rooms; 5) the difference in cost per square foot associated with the new construction options evaluated; 6) how proposed spaces will allow for the evolution of future programmatic changes; 7) how the proposed curriculum influences in-service training, the role of industry advisory groups, and internships; 8) availability of natural lighting in all spaces; 9) exterior features; and, 10) the potential for students and alumni to be involved in aspects of the building design.
The FAS requested that the District keep the MSBA informed of conversations with member towns as the proposed project progresses.
MSBA staff is currently working with the District to reach a mutually agreeable solution to recommend to the MSBA’s Board of Directors.
Narragansett Regional School District
Templeton Center Elementary School
Current Phase: Feasibility Study
Owner’s Project Manager: Colliers International Group, Inc.
Designer: Symmes Maini & McKee Associates, Inc.
The District, the Owner’s Project Manager, and design team presented its overview of the options studied during the Feasibility Study and the District’s preferred solution to replace the existing Templeton Center Elementary School and Baldwinville Elementary School on the Templeton Center Elementary School site with a new facility. The FAS, MSBA staff, and the District discussed: 1) the use of five-sided classrooms; 2) the location of the art and music spaces; 3) the transition of the current and interim Superintendent as it relates to the educational program; 4) professional development for the incoming 5th grade teachers; 5) educational needs for performance space; and 6) the District’s scheduling of common core planning time.
MSBA staff is currently working with the District to reach a mutually agreeable solution to recommend to the MSBA’s Board of Directors.
