State Treasurer Steven Grossman, Chairman of the Massachusetts School Building Authority (“MSBA”), and Jack McCarthy, MSBA Executive Director, announced today that the MSBA Board of Directors has voted to move Greater Lowell Technical High School in Tyngsboro into the Schematic Design Phase. The District will continue to work in collaboration with the MSBA to produce detailed renderings of the potential addition/renovation to the school. Upon completion and approval of the schematic design by the MSBA Board, the District and the Authority will collaborate to determine the scope and budget of the proposed project.
“Listening to the needs of a community and developing projects accordingly are priorities at the MSBA, and the Greater Lowell Technical High School project is a case study in that sentiment,” said Treasurer Grossman. “Thanks to our collaborative work with local officials, we are working to build a safe and modern educational facility that will provide students with a top-notch learning environment.”
The proposed renovation would add 22,000 square feet of new construction to the existing facility and address deficiencies in building systems including roof, windows, plumbing and electrical.
“The future of the Massachusetts economy can be seen in our vocational schools, so it is vital for the state to invest in vocational education,” stated Executive Director McCarthy. “Today’s vote for the potential project in Tyngsboro is an important step in that direction,” he added.
The MSBA partners with Massachusetts communities to support the design and construction of educationally-appropriate, flexible, sustainable, and cost-effective public school facilities. Since its inception, the Authority has made $8.9 billion in reimbursements for school construction projects. These timely payments have saved municipalities over $2.9 billion in avoided local interest costs and have provided much needed cash flow to communities.
