MSBA Board Votes to Move West Street Elementary School in Granby to Schematic Design Phase

State Treasurer Deborah B. Goldberg, Chair of the Massachusetts School Building Authority (“MSBA”), and Jack McCarthy, MSBA Executive Director, announced today that the MSBA Board of Directors voted to move the West Street Elementary School in Granby into the Schematic Design phase. In the Schematic Design phase, Granby and the MSBA will look at options for a potential addition and renovation project at the existing East Meadow School. The next step is for the MSBA to work in collaboration with the District to produce detailed designs for a potential school project.

“Thanks to our collaboration with local officials in Granby, we are working to build a safe and modern educational facility that will provide students with a top-notch learning environment,” said Treasurer Goldberg.

The proposed project would relocate West Street School students and combine Kindergarten through grade 6 at the East Meadow School. East Meadow School was built in 1965 and has deficiencies in mechanical, plumbing and electrical systems. West Street Elementary School was built in 1941 and suffers from deficiencies in major building systems including mechanical, plumbing and windows. The improved 72,400 square foot East Meadow School would serve 430 students in Kindergarten through grade 6.

“Production and approval of a schematic design will help us to determine the final budget for the potential project,” Executive Director McCarthy said.

The MSBA partners with Massachusetts communities to support the design and construction of educationally-appropriate, flexible, sustainable and cost-effective public school facilities. Since its 2004 inception, the Authority has made over 1,600 site visits to more than 250 school districts as part of its due diligence process and has made over $11.5 billion in reimbursements for school construction projects.
